At the beginning of October, the Centre for Research Libraries (CRL) engaged Ann Okerson as Senior Adviser on Electronic Strategies. Ann has been Associate University Librarian for Collections and International Programs at Yale University, and is currently on the Governing Board and Chair of the Professional Committee of IFLA. Ann has also been executive director of NERL and founder and moderator of LibLicense, as well as being active in a number of other international projects and initiatives. CRL will draw upon Ann's knowledge and experience in its efforts to ensure persistent and affordable access for CRL libraries to electronic resources in the humanities and social sciences.

At the British Library, Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive Officer of the BL since 2000, also took up a three-year post in September as a Non-Executive Director of Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries. Lynne is a Member of the Arts & Humanities Research Council and a Board Member of the Creative Industries Knowledge Transfer Network.

Also at The British Library, Maja Maricevic was appointed Head of Higher Education in August. At the BL, Maja will continue to develop the Library's relationship with higher education institutions and related government and sector bodies to help ensure that the UK research base retains and enhances its world-class reputation. For the previous three years, Maja was a higher education consultant at the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where she worked with universities and government departments on a variety of projects, ranging from policy development to operational and cost efficiency. Maja also led higher education policy and development work at the London Development Agency from 2004 to 2008. [See ‘People in the News’ in this issue for a fuller profile of Maja]

At the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Nickie Roome, Collection Development Librarian, has taken early retirement after seven years with the library. Earlier this year, Chief Librarian, Kevin Jackson took early retirement after ten years at DEFRA. Kevin was previously at the (then called) Central Veterinary Laboratory library. Mark Maidment, formerly Deputy Chief Librarian, is now Information Resource Centre Manager at DEFRA.

At the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), Debbie Barney was appointed Information Resources Manager in April and is responsible for all resources on the FCO's electronic library. Debbie was previously in knowledge management at FCO.

At the MOD, Chris Watson, former Service Manager at Ministry of Defence Abbey Wood Information and Library Centre and latterly an Implementation Co-ordinator for MOSS (Microsoft SharePoint) information management systems in Defence Equipment & Support, is leaving MOD DE&S in November on early release. Chris intends to look for short-term and contract work thereafter as he would like to keep occupied and in touch with the Information and Library sector.

All who knew him will have been saddened to have heard news of the death of David Male earlier this year. For 34 years, David was a mainstay and key figure in the Ministry of Defence Library Services during what is now seen as its golden age, when library and information positions were to be found in units, colleges and establishments throughout the UK and beyond. Notably, David was the College Librarian of the Royal Naval College at Greenwich from 1983 to 1992. David retired in 1995 and died March 22 this year.

Nirvana Flanagan became the Librarian at the Office of Public Works in Co Meath last December when she moved from the Chief State Solicitor's Office in Dublin where she had also been Librarian.

Following the merger of Edinburgh College of Art with the University of Edinburgh at the beginning of August, Gordon Andrew is now Assistant Librarian Information Systems at the University. Gordon joined Edinburgh College of Art in 1997 as Technical Services Librarian and since April this year had been Joint Acting Principal Librarian with Jane Furness at the college. Jane is currently Liaison Librarian at Edinburgh College of Art which is now a school of the university.

At JISC Collections, Liam Earney has been seconded to head up the Shared Services ERM project for a year. Carolyn Alderson is Acting Head of Licensing during Liam's secondment. Licensing Manager, Caroline Mackay is on maternity leave – congratulations on the arrival of Katherine Jane on 24 September!

Bruce Heterick, Vice President, Outreach & Participation Services for Portico and JSTOR, who was elected last year by members of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) to serve as Vice Chair of the NISO Board of Directors for the 2010–2011 term, became Chair of NISO for the 2011–12 term, from the beginning of July.

At the University of Oxford, Chris Fletcher is now Keeper of Special Collections and Western Manuscripts, having previously been Keeper of Western Manuscripts. At the beginning of August, Richard Ovenden took up the post of Deputy Librarian of the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford. Richard was formerly Keeper of Special Collections.

At the Bodleian Law Library, Lindsay Robinson was appointed Acquisitions Librarian in June. Lindsay has worked at the Law Library for four years, most recently as English Language Cataloguer. Lindsay replaces Laura Cracknell who moved to the Sainsbury Library at the Said Business School in Oxford as Circulation and Customer Services Librarian in March this year.

In September, Kate Wittenberg took up her post as the new Managing Director of Portico. Eileen Fenton, who successfully led Portico since its founding in 2002, will continue in her role as ITHAKA's Executive Vice President of Technology & Content Services. Kate was formerly Project Director, Client and Partnership Development for Ithaka S+R, before which she had spent most of her career at Columbia, where she was the Editor-in-Chief of Columbia University Press until 1999, and went on to found and direct EPIC (the Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia) for the University.

At the beginning of September, Nuala Devlin became Assistant Director Student and Learning Services at Sheffield Hallam University. Nula was Deputy Librarian at Nottingham Trent University and was appointed to her new post on the retirement of Edward Oyston at the end June. Edward had been at Sheffield Hallam since 1995.

In September, Sarah Durrant took up her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP). Sarah has more than 20 years' experience in scholarly publishing gained in a variety of roles at major publishing houses and related organizations. Since 2007, Sarah has been Managing Director of Red Sage Consulting and for the past three years has served as Secretary General of the Association of Subscription Agents & Intermediaries (ASA).

Nawin Gupta was appointed Secretary General of the ASA in September. Nawin has a long and distinguished publishing background and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in scholarly and trade publishing, having been involved in publishing programmes of large professional societies (American Medical Association and American Bar Association), major academic presses (University of Chicago and University of Iowa), and commercial publishers (Reed Elsevier). He has served in many volunteer positions in the publishing industry, including executive boards of the PSP Division of the Association of American Publishers, the International Association of STM Publishers, the Association of Medical Publishers, and CrossRef. In addition to ASA work, Nawin will continue as Principal at Informed Publishing Solutions, Inc. (www.IPSig.com), a publishing consulting practice based in Chicago. Nawin will be based in Chicago.

At Axiell Group AB, a leading vendor of IT services and systems to archives, libraries and museums, Joel Sommerfeldt, has been appointed as the new CEO. Joel, previously CEO for Kelva AB and a board member of Axiell, will take up office in January from Jerk Sintorn, Axiell's incumbent CEO who, after 16 years as CEO, has decided to step down and devote himself to other tasks at Axiell.

Cengage Learning has recently integrated its sales organization in order to provide the academic and library market with a broader service across all the products within the Cengage Learning product portfolio. As a result of these changes, made in July 2011, Diane Thomas, formerly Sales Director for Gale Library Reference has left the company after around eight years. Andrew Robinson, formerly Higher Education Sales Director, has been appointed Group Sales Director across all Cengage Learning product portfolios including Gale Library Reference, English Language Teaching and Higher Education textbooks and digital solution products.

In July, Diane Kerr became Managing Director of Blackwell Library Supply and joins the main Board of Blackwell Limited. Diane has 30 years' experience in the book industry and was formerly the Managing Director of Dawson Books.

After 29 years in the book trade, George Hammond took early retirement at the end of July from Dawson Books where he was most recently Client Relationship Manager. George taught for 13 years, first in the East End of London and then in Buckinghamshire where he moved to become a Deputy Headmaster. Fancying a new challenge, George joined Bumpus Haldane & Maxwell in Onley in 1982 and remained with the company following its acquisition first by Dawson Holdings and then by Dawson Books.

Harrassowitz has announced the retirement of Dr Knut Dorn as Senior Managing Partner and Director of Sales at the end of this year. Knut joined the company in 1964, initially as a Customer Service and Marketing Associate, before he was accepted into the partnership and assumed responsibility for Library Services in 1972. He will be remembered particularly for his considerable involvement in and support of the ASA and also for establishing the Harrassowitz's scores service.

In July, Kurt Sanford joined ProQuest as CEO and as a member of its Board of Directors. Kurt spent the previous 14 years at LexisNexis, serving most recently as President, Global Operations for its global legal business. He succeeds Marty Kahn, who had led ProQuest since it was acquired by Cambridge Information Group in 2007 and is now Vice Chairman of ProQuest's Board of Directors.

At Publishing Technology, Jon White has been appointed Business Development Director for Australia and New Zealand. He was formerly Digital Publishing Director at Macmillan Education and Digital Licensing Manager at Penguin, before taking on various consulting assignments in the sector. Based in Sydney, Jon will initially focus on opportunities for Publishing Technology's Enterprise Applications suite of products.

Dan Dyer joined the Royal Society of Chemistry in October as Head of Sales EMEAI. The new senior-level, strategic position includes managing the RSC journals and e-books portfolio in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India. Dan was previously Head of Sales, UK & Ireland at ProQuest, which he joined nine years ago from Dialog.

In September, Mick Archer took up a new role as a Product Development Manager at Swets Information Services. Mick, who has been managing libraries in the pharmaceutical sector for over 30 years, most recently at AstraZeneca, will bring this experience as well as that of work on COUNTER and copyright committees, to help Swets develop new services in line with the needs of both the corporate and academic sectors.

In July, Romain Chesa joined the Taylor & Francis Group as eBooks and Online Sales Executive where he is responsible for all e-book and online sales to library customers throughout the UK, Ireland and France. Romain joined T&F on completing his MA in Publishing at UCL. He was an Assistant Librarian before moving into publishing three years ago as a Technical Editor and a Literary Rights Agent with publishing companies in Bulgaria and France.

Matthew Howells joined Wiley in August as a Senior Account Manager in the EMEA Institutional Sales team responsible for the UK (South) and Ireland. Matthew was previously with OUP where he was the Sales Manager for the UK and Northern Europe.

Cliff and Margaret Morgan retire from Wiley at the beginning of November. Between them, they have worked at John Wiley & Sons for over 46 years and in the industry for a combined 83.5 years: Margaret was at Blackwell Subscription Agency for 24 years and Cliff at Pergamon Press, Kluwer and Holt Saunders for 13 years. Both have been regular attendees at UKSG, with Margaret recently having served on the editorial board of Serials and Cliff being quizmaster on a couple of occasions and in 2011 being in the winning team! Margaret and Cliff look forward to a long retirement in the Malvern Hills and indulging in reading for pleasure, theatre, travelling the globe, gardening (Margaret) cooking (Cliff), not to mention supporting their recently promoted rugby team Worcester Warriors.
