The landscape shifts: new opportunities for collaboration arise as the primacy of the traditional journal article fades

Author:

T Scott Plutchak

Abstract

In the digital environment, new mechanisms for the exchange of scholarly information (databanks, institutional repositories, social networking software) are competing with traditional journal articles for scholars' time and attention. In addition, the journal article itself is evolving into a more dynamic, interlinked format. These changes will continue to challenge the ways in which members of the serials community fulfill their traditional roles, but they also create opportunities for establishing new partnerships among the affected sectors.
